Tranmere story

John Clayton (born 20 August 1961 in Elgin) is a Scottish former professional footballer who played as a striker. After beginning his career with Derby County and later playing for Bulova in Hong Kong and Chesterfield, he joined Tranmere Rovers in 1984.

Clayton enjoyed an outstanding spell at Prenton Park. In the 1984–85 season he scored 31 Football League goals, finishing as the division's joint leading scorer, while forming a prolific strike partnership with Colin Clarke. Across all competitions he scored 41 goals in 55 appearances for Tranmere, a rate of 0.75 goals per game.

He left Rovers for Plymouth Argyle in 1985 and later played in the Netherlands for Fortuna Sittard and FC Volendam before returning to England with Burnley. After his playing career, Clayton moved into youth coaching, including work with Bristol City's academy.
